Personal opinion of this cheap cameras: While the price is cheap, the quality, sadly seems to be equally cheap. While many glowly reviews gave this camera 5 stars uut of 5, they didn't specificy much as to why. The complaints however, did say exactly why. The biggest problems were an e18 memory error (which can be solved by buying a new SD card for this memery camera?) and the lcd screen being way too fragile. I would recommend an lcd protector screen to keep it form shattering, though age will eventually catch up to this camera. If you buy this, get this for dirt cheap or you'll feel angry at canon, who otherwise in general makes great cameras.

Personal opinion of this cheap cameras: Well, if you get a used or refurb of this camera, the price reduction is astronomical. Aside from that, most of hte hundreds of people said this camera was great and even said it was so good it was easier to talk about how itw as bad (as the good was just too much to write). The only common complaint across all people was that this was slightly bigger and bulkier than the usual smaller cameras, and that this requires a little more reading of the instruction manual to use. Once you've read it a little bit though, this camera should be as easy as using a point and shoot cam (with all hte automated features figuring everything out for you of course). Camera is designed for any kind of use. Awesome all purpose, all around cam.

Personal opinion of this cheap cameras: While price is low, pepole did have some issues with it, and different kinds of issues. Oddly enough they still gave the camera good reviews nonetheless. Shutter speed may be anoying but nobody mentions at what speeds. Still, with the sheer amount of compalits with conflicting positive ratings that were very high, I guess people were just expecting a little too much out of an old camera. So, it's probably safe to say this is a good camera that has some flaws. At least the cheap price reflects all this.

Personal opinion of this cheap cameras: This was one of the arly predecesosrs of the Canon digital elph camera (such as sd450, 560, 850, etc). Although old, it still packs quite a lot of picture taking processing power. Using hte digic 2 or 3 processor, pic quality is high and recycle time is fast and low. Since it is an older model, it goes for really cheap, even more inexpensive if you buy it used or refurbished. Definately a great buy.

Manual control settings much easier compared to other brand name digital cameras. Clear detail. Has viewfinder. Sharp images. Large sensor. Economical and extremely cheap compared to most other cameras of similiar stats and quality. Excellent zoom."

Batteries can be a bit of a pain unless they are high quality and full of charged energy. Refresh could be a bit faster."

Personal opinion: Overwhelming majority of users and photographers gave this a near perfect score. There were many who did give good ratings however. Most complaints stemmed from the battery life (the included ones, probably should buy your own double a's batteries) and the noise level at very high ISO levels. The shutter speed is also a bit slow at very high settings. The picture quality makes these negatives very minor, however. Plus, the price is super duper cheap and low priced; I'm surprised this wasn't much more expensive than what it is being sold for (maybe they'll jack up the prices in the future???). Overall, great buy and hundreds of people were very happy with it.

Personal opinion: Every rating for this camera was positive. Any negative points of view only reduced the raiting on this camera slightly. Whatm ost people didnt mention was how low and cheap the price on this powershot camera was. For all the features and quality and the material what is made , this digital camera hands down, is great if not superior to most line of model cameras. Definately worth it if you need the extra bang over the sd1000 IS.

Update 1: Canon powersho sd1100is shutterlag is tied to the flash. Nobody mentioned a time frame but the Higher the iso setting, the longer in delay for flash. The 3 second mark seems to be the cutoff mark if you want near instantaneous (no lag) shots between flashes.

Personal opinion: For the most part, very few sd850 complaints. On top of that, most complaints were about minor issues, such as noted above. The price is decent for a camera of this kind and definately delivers what you need out of a camera. Most users rating this seemed to be casual folks. If you're planning to take a vacation or trip somewhere and want to take pictures, most tourists who rated this said this is one of the best cameras they've used, especially when shooting through different weathers or environments (the camera can auto adjust settings whether you are taking pictures in Alaska or hawaii; different environments, even more different picture settings...).

Update 1: So far still not too many sd850 complaints. I did find one from amazon that complained about shoddy customer care from Canon who actually "refused?" to honor the warranty on the SD850 (which is what the complaint was about). Warranties don't seem to cover damage due to water inside the camera (Canon basically said there was condensation inside the camera and wouldn't repair it because of it). I hope this is an isolated case but if not, know that there isn't a recourse for anyone who buys the SD850 and lodges a complaint or files for warranty repairs (not good at all).

Let's hope Canon has a response to this as people pay really good money for these cameras. (In fact, the sd850 complaint that condensation damaged the camera and therefore voids the warranty sounds ridiculous - canon should FIX it!!!).

If you are professional photographer and must need everything perfect and included in a digital camera for your jobs or contracts, the few comments that I've read from same such people said you should try a different camera. This is more designed for taking really good pictures in a casual setting but delivers decent professional pictures if your job depends on it. While most people gave this near perfect scores, the amount of counter viewpoints by a minority was enough to drop this good camera down a couple of rating points. Overall, good camera but if you need the best and most perfect camera, you're going to look at Canon's more expensive, more superior models probably.

Update 1: If you plan on coming to my hometown of New York City, New York, then one of the things you'll want to bring with you (obviously) is a camera. Many tourists to New York ring the SD870IS because of it's versatile features and ability to take sharp, crisp image pictures in any environmental condition, indoor and outdoor. So, if you're from say, Brazil, you won't have to worry about haze or smog affecting picture clarity and creating blurs.

Personal opinion: For the most part, this camera is superior in all of its features. In fact, it can do things so well that it does it *too* well which explains some of the above complaints. The menu could be simpler though. I'd advise using near max settings and not max setting so you don't get picture distortions or blurs. Other than that, you will get superior quality video and pictures that will capture every important moment in your life.

My personal thinking/ opinion/ rating: "This camera had more complaints about it but overall still ranked well amongst a majority of users. I guess since this is a really old model and people nowadays want better cameras, I guess that gave reason to the complaints. The most common had to do with no image stabilizer so you'd get a lot of blurry pictures taken if you didn't have a steady hand or tripod camera holder. Otherwise, most people just said this was a great camera and since it was so cheap, why not?"

Auto ISO for indoor flash for below 200 doesn't seem to work. Markings on battery orientation kind of stupid. Noise reduction can't be changed. ISO 1600 questionable use because artifacts from noise reduction mess up picture a bit. Bundled 16mb card too small, recommend buying a 2gb memory card for digital camera. "
